We get to grips with the new 255mph Bugatti Grand Sport Vitesse, the world's fastest convertible.

Some men don’t think twice about spending £1.6 million (€1.91m) on a set of wheels – funny how it’s always men who buy these hypercars, yet women get pilloried for the price of a designer handbag. But is Bugatti’s Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse, a faster version of the standard Veyron, a mere set of wheels?

Outgoing chairman Wolfgang Durheimer compares it to a piece of art, which seems as fantastical as the claimed 255mph top speed. While there’s a tendency to regard Jozef KabanĖ‡’s piece of industrial design as an Audi TT after a mishap with an air hose, this car transcends mere beauty, with a squat functionality combined with a vision of speed straight off a page of Buckminster Fuller’s notebook. This is a chariot of desires.

I am still having trouble digesting the price for this car .... £1.6 million (€1.91m).
