On first glance it looks like an ancient family runaround from the 1960s, but thanks to some one-off engineering this estate car is faster than a Ferrari.

The 45-year-old Volvo estate has been modified with a supercar specification by Swedish engineer Mattias Vocks, and is now quicker than a Ferrari 458 Italia.

Mattias, 32, fitted the 1967 Volvo with a 2.8-litre engine, a six-speed gearbox and brakes from a 240mph Koenigsegg supercar, giving it a whopping 800bhp.

Exploring the muscle-car end of the sports-car spectrum

What is it?

Lamborghini calls this a purist's car, a rear-drive convertible version of the Gallardo. The LP stands for longitudinale/ posteriore, meaning that the engine is longitudinally mounted behind the two seats and forward of the rear axle, which is where you'd expect it to be. The 550 is the output of the normally aspirated V10 in horsepower (though if you convert 405 kilowatts to horsepower you get 543; close enough), which you'd also expect. But the 2 means that all of that power goes to the two rear wheels instead of to all four wheels, as has been far more common in almost all other Lamborghinis in the last 10 to 15 years. The latter you wouldn't expect, given that almost all Lamborghinis have used all-wheel drive to harness their tremendous output. So with all of that power going to the rears, combined with a convertible roof, this Gallardo really should live up to its billing as a purist's ride.

This modified Lamborghini Murcielago is claimed to rev at 142 dB, which if true means it’s as loud as a gun firing.

While we can’t be certain how loud this modded Murcielago actually is without heading out and testing it in person, this video of its owner revving the hell out of it shows that the 142-dB claim certainly has some merit.

Lamborghini claims its latest supercar, the Aventador LP700-4, can hit a top speed of 217 miles per hour, or 350 kilometers per hour. On the way to this maximum velocity, it will hit 62 mph (100 km/h) in 3.1 seconds and 124 mph (200 kn/h) in 8.8 seconds, which is about the time it takes the average family sedan to hit the 60 mile per hour mark.

As this Sport Auto video shows, the Aventador is plenty fast around the Hockenheim short course, too. In fact, its 1:08.6 time ties the Porsche Carerra GT and beats the McLaren MP4-12C (1:08.7), losing only to the 1:08.4 lap set by a Porsche 911 GT2 RS wearing Michelin Pilot Sport Cup tires.

Ten people were rushed to hospital after the smash on the Chugoku Expressway in Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi Prefecture, yesterday afternoon, but none of their injuries were said to be serious.
